美国之音报道，第一夫人在圣诞节期间访问国家儿童医院是一项长期传统，不过，拜登的到访令人惊喜。白宫说，在任总统参加这项祝贺活动，还是第一次。
在医院，拜登夫妇与一组为冬季手工项目制作灯笼的孩子交谈，问他们在灯笼上画的是什么。有些孩子画的是家人，有些孩子画的是雪人或者其他假日主题。
拜登还拿出了自己的手机给孩子们看他的新爱犬——4个月大的德国牧羊犬“司令”。
